HAPPY MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese people, dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty.  It is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival.
It is a date that parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the few most important holidays in the Chinese. Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes under the moon together also carrying brightly lit lanterns.

TV CONSOLE CABINETS

Think outside the box. Many TV cabinets I see in the stores and on the Internet have an open compartment for the equipment to be housed.  Personally, I don't design a room and want all these things showing; the DVD player, cable box, router, sling catcher, etc - it's just ugly.  It's hard enough to hide all the cords.

I find body styles that can be interpreted and become a TV cabinet.  60"W x 30"H x 20" is good size depending on the size of your TV itself.  Of course, save room for speakers too.   The use of Frosted Glass or a wood grill will allow the Infa Red to work with your remote controls.   The cabinet also has to be designed to store all those DVD's we accumulate (and music CDs).

Viewing distance recommendations are approximately 6 to ten feet for screens sizeed 37". A 42" plasma display may be optimally viewed from 10-14 feet. A 50" plasma display will look best from 12-16 feet, and you should have at least 15 feet to work with when installing a 60" or higher.

I used the body style below and added a decorative top in the raw wood look.  It matches the dining table.   Then painted a shabby distressed cream.

Many of my customers comment they don't want to see the TV in the living room - they don't want it the center of attention.  Well, let's face it - our flats are small for most of us and we no longer have  family rooms.  The gathering place is the living room and many of us gather around the TV.  Don't try to arrange the room to hide it - arrange the room to cozy it up.

This is my TV cabinet - I decorate in a French country feel.  This was an antique Chinese Cabinet that I had painted and changed out the doors.

This is one I designed.  I saw a sideboard that was sold and copied the artwork.  Then added the abstract panels for the TV equipment.  It's only painted orange on the front.  The rest is a dark brown stain on the top and sides.

CONSOLE TABLES

You don't have to spend a lot of money to create impact.

These simple console tables can be used behind a sofa to push it forward,  especially if you're too far away from the TV or if you don't have enough room on the side for a sofa table.  Two lamps can be displayed giving light to either end of the couch.  Make them at least 18" deep if you are adding lamps with large shades.

Make them 30" tall if you want a chair to be used with them.  Maybe not now - but if you move - you can reinvent it.
Did anyone notice that these are only black and white?

Here are two that are pretty with pink......  or is that salmon?

SETTING UP IN HONG KONG

I know many of you arrive in Hong Kong with very little and furnishing an entire flat from scratch can be overwhelming.

Start with inspiration:  have an idea of what you want - you can find it in current magazines or on the internet.

Then find a great fabric that you love and build your design around it! Whether it is plaid, floral, striped or solid, make it the foundation fabric for your room. Try not to use more than 3 fabrics to a room, it can cause confusion rather than balance unless you know what your doing.  There are many on-line fabric stores in the USA - have them ship US Postal Service  - order a swatch first.  It will arrive in about 10 days.  Email me for the sites.

There's a 60/30/10 rule in decorating.  60% is the main color in the room (walls or sofa) - 30% can be the accent fabric(pillows) and 10%  small accessory accent for a punch.

Make a floor plan - find the traffic flow.  You can break rules - and place furniture in unconventional ways.  Most flats are NOT built to accommodate normal placement.

Carry your fabrics, wish list & measurements when you shop.  You never know when you might find something special.

HIGH STYLE

While hunting in all the showrooms I find the chairs are just too small to fit comfortably.  I want my guests to feel cozy while lingering over dinner, dessert and long conversations - I even curl up with my glass of wine when the dinner is over.  This doesn't have arms but you can lean into it.  This design is featured by the best in many variations and we had to have it.  I brought my 6'3" son into the showroom to make sure the point was made - it had to be this size.
