Here's a nice clean modern design for a dining table.  The bottom supports are out of the way of everyone's legs. 

I'm a big fan of mixing at the dining table - it's actually the fashion.  Here is a rustic wood table with painted chairs. What if they were painted black and distressed?  Here's the look below.  It's more URBAN design and less clean European Contemporary.

I don't recommend all the woods to be the same in the room - you can have 2 shades - I usually go light to dark.  Rustic to Polished - to create a warm mix. 
And the lines are clean - so more contemporary. 

Or add a little red to the mix and so the two blend...
